FIVE AND HALF YEARS OF LEARNING TEXTILE DESIGN AT NID AHMEDABAD AND APPAREL DESIGN WORKSHOP where I have learnt from Ex Senior Most NID Faculty and FIT New York Senior Faculty for NID APPAREL DESIGN Faculty Development Program at NID Ahmedabad, than after and with, almost thirty four years EXPERIENCE of TEXTILE,TEXTILE WEAVING AND OVER ALL TEXTILE DESIGNING with REPUTE Textile Industries in INDIA, even than I feel my gathered knowledge about textile is not complete.
Out of thirty four years of my work experience, sixteen years I have pure and solid experience with repute Textile Industries in India, such as ARVIND MILLS AHMEDABAD, from there I have began my first PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE OF WOVEN APPAREL FABRIC DESIGNING such as Suiting, Shirting and Dress Material etc, JAYA SHREE TEXTILE {LINEN MILLS} RISHRA, KOLKATA, WEST BENGAL, there from I have developed versatile textile, which varies from finest to thicker “LINEN FABRIC” such as Shirting, Suiting, Dress Material, Jacket Material, Fire Retardant Fabric, Home Furnishing, Specially Designed for hand loom sector woven furnishing and jacket fabric, as well as various blends of textile and purposeful fabric as linen, in endless permutation and combination with effortless through empirical methods of each new blends with linen and other textile fibres to enhance quality of linen fabric for Domestic and Overseas Market.“ LIKE SCRATCH TO END USER”, it is like “From development to outreach the targeted final consumer”. After that I was Full Time Faculty at NID for 2 years then again gone back to industry as a consultant with my old industrial associates.
After Founding GIFT NGO on 05TH Day of OCTOBER 1995 in Ahmedabad UNDER BANNER OF GIFT: GANDHI INSTITUTE OF FASHION TEXTILE in AHMEDABAD-GUJARAT-INDIA and Till today with my expertise and experience of textile and textile Design in versatile meaning of TEXTILE I have found that in MANY KNOWN DESIGN INSTITUTES it is very difficult to make fresh learners to learn WEAVE & WEAVING and practice appropriately Design as understood, Fabric construction which they have learned during their education, that is why for them finding job with Handsome perks and salary is not an easy task today. But at GIFT to understand how to design fabrics in synchronization of fibre to yarn, yarn to fabric with understanding of weaving machine capacities etc is quite HANDY for them, simply because of the GIFT NGO Design Education POLICIES in general to all GIFT learners.

The Story of my learning at NID is like almost lost memories which I cannot recall, because I never live and work like my other colleagues except sports and all my good deeds which I have favored humbly, humanly, to all NIDians, by my heart and soul, without any personal cause and needs, which no NID personals and associate can DENY.
At NID from morning six am to almost 11 pm except holiday throughout the year I used to work for my knowledge and design skills, rather than gossiping, talking ill for any cause, to be foolish critic, finding faults in education systems and others, only talking and not doing any things, Non productive activities after with great length discussions, Human emotion without heart and soul, whistling-giggling having fun all the time and many more subject can be written for this education systems but certainly it was not my cup of tea, which I ignored with my fullest conscious, courageously and courteously to all those things at NID, which were not Human to me, like a Good Human, like my parents, brothers, sister, few friends of NID and few INDIANS like Gandhiji and now my wife ,son and daughter. Certainly I was not alone at NID during my learning, because I felt I was the happiest person due to my progress every day GOOD and next day again GOOD and NO DOUBT NID RESOURCE CENTER, WORKING PLACE, WORK SHOPS, STUDIOS, GENERAL FABULOUS FACILITIES ROUND THE CLOCK and its GREEN surrounding etc, which I left behind, their critics and my last day of working, teaching and learning at NID. 
Then how can I remember how much I have worked while learning at NID may be my thinking or may be my skilfully subjective learning, then how to count that my past activities, for that I was not having time to calculate and tabulate systematically for me and for others like my colleagues used to do for their future. For example, if I calculate and put things in an orderly Manner and forming tabulate to present my SAMPLE WEAVING OR ITS LEARNING is almost FOUR TIMES MORE than my learning days at NID, due to that I was not able to do so and because of that I have no, proper presentation of my above learning at NID, SORRY for such cause in ones in my life and life to live as on. For such presentation one needs money to satisfy whom for what cause, learning or others egos, for me learning at NID, was more JOYFUL than NID and LIVE HAPPILY is more important, rather than satisfying others IDIOM EGOS IDIOTICALLY. But I never hurt any one and any one feeling as a human, which no body can deny, that is why I was call for teaching at NID, immediately as soon after my graduation as a visiting faculty for major subject as coordination of textile weaving apparel and print design, for that ARVIND MILLS of Ahmedabad allowed me half a day for eight weeks, to reach NID by auto and back I have paid four time more than what I got paid by NID for its purpose of teaching at NID,I know they were poor in account, because they were like me, but today they knows account in detail and comparison to account, designing is less known to them, which is not GOOD for them and for NID. This is I understood from my past experience of NID. SORRY.
SIMPLY as a learner of NID, through out of my tenor, I was a Teacher and Guide to my self. That is why I was the only student of NID in that Time, who have taken weaving sector as such COMPOSITE TEXTILE UNITE {Textile Industries as} as a challenge to work in as a Textile Designer and later after joining Textile industry weaving sector, I found nothing is tough, if there is a zest of working, success is there, by virtue of GOD Almighty.
If you like to be learner of Textile Weaving be a Teacher and Guide for your self than your learning becomes easy and simple than only you can simplify all weaving concept, BEFORE its weaving on SAMPLE LOOM, which is very important for working in textile industries, there designer never weave on sample loom, is not their job, kindly understand the above message.
Please note down, this is very, very important message for learner as well as for teachers.
From the above methods and understanding, one can synchronize their knowledge of weaves as required for, appropriate fabric structure {construction} for design look and its tactile along with varying yarn with different blends and colors in its final fabric weaving, to get true picture of woven sample on surface or underneath as thoughts before process of sample weaving, which is very, verily important in industry for cost of development and as well as time factor to lead in competitive market.
One can understand the above message, when they practice appropriately and certainly they will enhance desired results.
People of the textile world, may find me, foolish, because I have made my knowledge with my heart and soul, total transparent in favor of global learners of textile weaving, so they can without any hurdles and difficulties, do’s and don’ts, with no hesitation and hindrance can share my expertise, from where any fresh learner can take or gather knowledge, from my notes in their favor of their textile world by the virtue of God Almighty and by G.I.F.T. NGO.
We simplified weaving construction for the fresh learner in such a way, before heading to sample loom and weave fabric sample, they should know what they are going to get on fabric top surface and underneath, which is very easy to understand, for an example: if learner is learning multiple layer of fabric as such “double cloth or multi layer cloth weave” may be from finest to the coarser count to weave finest fabric to the thickest fabric, as such Neck ties fabric to tapestry fabric, where you can utilize multiple layer of fabric weave through interlacement for forming various design motifs as per drawn sketch colorfully while utilizing the understanding of fabric construction appropriate manipulation of warp ends play and weft insertion, without loosing the loom shaft frame guide line through peg plane, which should be synchronize, warp and pick play as according to the fabric construction and design motif, certainly one can see every single warp end and weft pick role on graph of weave construction clearly and more in fabric sample weaving, to weave multi layer, one need to began weaving from bottom to top layer or vice versa, without disturbing there partner shaft frame, that means two shaft needed for plain and as on like for different weave, while weaving, except partner shaft frame, no other partner shaft should allowed to interlace, that means other partner shaft frame are kept ideal, may be in bottom or on top of the weave open shade, when one partner shaft is involve in weaving, once their weft insertion gets completed, they should be kept in bottom ideal, than next partner shaft frame will weave, as on one can easily weave multi layer fabric with sound understanding of warp ends and picks working.
To make understand FRESH GIFT LEARNER the above MULTI LAYER FABRIC CONSTRUCTION, we make them to weave with different color paper strip on paper only to understand the weave of fabric, than we teaches FABRIC SETTING along with REED COUNT and DENTING ORDER IN RELATION TO WARP & WEFT COUNT in detail in theories and as well as through PRACTICALLY.
After wards we teaches them all manipulation and derivatives of weaves so they should not get DISHEARTENED while seeing such fabric in market, but I feel sorry, except GIFT no other institution are teaching such things in detail as per my knowledge. That is why GIFT NGO DESIGN INSTITUTE is different from others.
That is why only few has the zest for textile and they can learn by themselves, by analyzing the fabric systematically then think, how many such design student are there to take pain for such learning. No doubt it is not complicated, it is very easy, if someone uses logic and its synchronization of warp and weft interlacement, as appropriately guided through peg plan “FABRIC CONSTRUCTION” along with INTERLACEMENT of warp and weft to see while doing analysis of fabric, becomes very easy, have PATIENCE, this is the only way from others work, world designers are learning and upgrading them self.
At GIFT initially we teach them, on white board all fabric weave CONSTRUCTION and there derivatives style systematically and they note down on graph paper the same, then we ask them to weave the same with paper strips, while marking through vertical cut on paper as warp strip and weft should be through insertion, due to that what they have not understood while teaching on board for almost 16 hours, but they understand, while doing with paper strips as weave construction weaving pattern in different color, no doubt they learn in detail and their learning is much rapid than above. I have developed this exercise for GIFT learners where we provide them in rectangle form in between the paper vertical cut strips as warp and ask them to weave with colorful strips as they have learnt on white board, as follows:
PLAIN WEAVE {TABBY}, WEFT RIB {OXFORD}, WARP REP, DRILL WEAVE, BASKET WEAVE, TWILL WEAVE, BROKEN-HERRINGBONE-POINTED-DIAMOND-AND WAVY TWILL AND ITS ALL DERIVATIVES, COLOR AND WEAVE-CORD WEAVE, BED FORD CORD WEAVE, VELVET WEAVE, REGULAR & IRREGULAR SATEEN WEAVE, GOOSE EYES, ROSE PATH, BIRDS EYE, WHEAT, CRAPE WEAVES, HONEYCOMB WEAVE, HUCK ABACK WEAVE, MOCK LENO WEAVE, DOUBLE CLOTH WEAVE, TUBULAR WEAVE AND MULTI LAYER CLOTH WEAVE.
While weaving the above mention weaves, with paper strips systematically they understand how warp is working and along with weft behavior on fabric surface as well as underneath at GIFT.
Once the above exercise gets over with gathered weaving knowledge then GIFT learners analyse the market fabric which GIFT provide in house to each GIFT LEARNER, according to the above mentioned all different styles of textile woven fabric, after completing these exercises they know how many ends and picks per inch in finished fabric and their interlacement. Due to this learning, they are again able to make graph of weave structure of that particular market sample what they analyse, with this exercise they develop confidence and they are able to co-relate their previous learning. That means in 3 weeks they become capable to do as they want in weaving.
The above mentioned GIFT EDUCATION POLICY indicates that any fresh learner can do miracles in weaving, while knowing or not knowing the loom mechanism and capacity of the machine for design weaves, because they learnt the FABRIC CONSTRUCTION IN DETAIL. For example if GIFT learner wants to convert the sketch in jacquard weave in style of tapestry they are able to do as their drawn sketch. Converting sketch into weave become possible for them, because they know every single end and pick behaviors appropriately, how that from the design step by step in weaving.
While learning through paper strips all fabric weave construction and analyzing the same construction of market finish fabric in different count in above mention exercise, with all other details, they understand, ALL BASICS OF FABRIC CONSTRUCTION and its weaving.

After completing the paper strip weaving step by step, through that knowledge they can have multiple color for warp in appropriate style of drafting, enhances through the peg plan they can change according to the motif of design what they have to weave along with synchronized weft appropriately with this style they can bring as many color on fabric surface according to the motif of design and they can hide inside the layer of fabric as wedded cloth.
Certainly, it is a child’s game for GIFT LEARNERS. No doubt their abilities about understanding from now, for all textile basic construction, which they can manipulate, the way they wants. For example jacquard weave, warp and weft effect weave, distorted weaves and multiple color and weave effect etc, they can analyse appropriately and can change to different design for any Textile Purpose.
They think before going on loom to weave the sample, they know everything what they are going to get once they put the warp on sample hand loom machine to get appropriate fabric as they design, and when they weave the sample, for them it is a child’s game. To make them understand more in detail they should weave samples while blocking loom shaft for purposeful meaning to get different look of textile.
The above knowledge make designers more encouraging when such thing can be learned in institutions, then certainly for such designers doors are open in industry because they will not waste time to train them and they know they are capable of fulfilling the needs of industry as desired by the market. After that we teach them in theories fibre, yarn, count, etc, because this subject is for designers’ is quite boring as a fresh learner. That is why at GIFT we have different policies and methods of teaching, due to that we never follow any teaching where student lose the heart of learning. That is why we are different than other institutions globally. Here we teach the above subject after weaving understating. In other design institutions they teach initially before weaving.

Where is the doubt?
Which I can not deny, the shortened design education idea, wasn't mine..,
it was NID, idea and very often discussed at NID in the year of 1983-1984, that
time I used to go for teaching as a visiting faculty and for such cause Arvind
Mills Ahmedabad Allowed me half a day where I was senior designer of weaving
section without deducting the salary and even though, I have not charged from
NID for conveyance in favor on NID students and onward 1986-1988 I use to
come from Jaya Shree Textile Linen Mills, Rishra, West Bengal for the same
purpose. That time I usually think why NID is trying to cut short five and half
years school leavers design education program by at least a year.
I used to wonder,
it is necessary or under some pressure or is it their realization???? Because
the same design regular course I had done from NID, due to that my curiosity
built up, which design course they will omit and at what stage of learning,
which I never used to admire and how they will slash learning time period if
they are not omitting any design course then how they will manage, so many
question and it was sabotage in my mind for calculating design education of
NID. Then after some time my mind swing in right direction to my queries enigma
in totality to succor me and then one day I found my self functioning in the
right manner as I got sacrosanct direction to the life. Than I was able to see
the light in, for short term design education and that idea of short term seed
sprouted in a manner of not to chop any branch of basic design education, which
I have learnt in past at NID. Due to the
God Almighty, I got the mission in life to simplify all design courses
along with, how to cut down learning cost, in favor of universal learners and
“result” of that is “GIFT” Ahmedabad-Gujarat-India and now Global.
Many years joyfully I struggled while working in all
repute Textile industry such as Arvind Mills Ahmedabad, JAYA SHREE Textile
LINEN (FLEX) Mills RISHRA KOLKATA, West Bengal, Raymond Mills Thane, Gujarat
Spinners Gujarat and many more along with teaching at NID as a visiting
faculty, to simplify
modestly, those all design courses which I learnt at NID as a student and in
continuation new design subjects which I have found and learned, while working
in industry in favor of learners. After sound understanding, writing and
practicing the above said mention short term part time design education, I have
tested continuously few years with various level of learners, such as school,
college students, graduates, housewife (home makers), painters, doctors and
singers etc and finally my mission “GIFT” Design Institute swing in action
appropriately in 1995.

Gift is a mirror of design education as like
transparent crystal water and that essence spreads through gift Gandhi
learners, Google blogs and many gift Gandhi Ahmedabad web site in favor of
global learners.
What we have
achieved in so many years, we were not aware, but universal messages from
global learners and professionals we realize our standing for our noble cause,
actually what gift teaches in just 7 months in part time fashion or textile
design, which is actually more than four and half years, fashion or textile
design educational program of NID, NIFT and other known design institute of
the world. This was not imaginary but shocking to all of us such as pioneer
founder of gift, faculty, guide, craft person, technician and gift learners,
but certainly we all have developed fear about our gift design education
program, because we need to maintain our knowledge up gradation and education
standard of gift. After such knowledge and awareness, we all become more
simple, humble and kind knowledgeable for our noble educational cause, to avoid
such thoughts and understanding we all become more friendly and due to that at
gift no one can find any prejudice against each others and there is no
hesitation or hindrance about improving every ones standard knowledge wise and
there is no space for egoist at gift.
We all knows that no human has supreme power as like
GOD, we are human & we will remain for our noble cause great learner. Our
destiny is gift which is pure by heart and soul, what else we all need from
Almighty God. That is why gift all learners live life meaningfully.
GIFT design education
and design course abstracts as like crystal water & as like fruits are so
near to our reach on tree, loaded and bow down & as like knowledgeable
person, who never behave as like egoist, that means gift simple basic design
education is more power full than others advance design education. Today, I my self finding life age is less
and why short for such noble educational cause.

Zest of GIFT Textile and Learning
No doubt everyone who takes birth by virtue of God Almighty comes into the world without textile and clothing with a cheerful welcome. Gradually as they grow gradually they enjoy the versatility of wonderful clothing by wearing beautiful textiles for appropriate shape of garments to fulfill the purpose as their status.
As we are all aware that the earth’s paradise is a treasure of unaccountable wonderful gist and gesture of unmatchable to each other, in two and two varying things, in versatile usage by human beings .In the same manner mostly every human grows and his or her mind develops appropriately.
As the above mentioned understanding his or her knowledgeable especially in relation to textile and fashion garment utility to fulfill their pride and liking which varies from individual to individual by many meanings and for that development of versatility of textile becomes an endless procedure in textile industries for our human society globally.
By the virtue of god almighty human mind took the actual shape in purposeful research and development for textile in correlation to its glamorous gist and gesture for human society while keeping in mind its comforts, drape, tactile and ergonomics. Due to the above wonderful event Textile has globally become the world’s second biggest industry after the food, due to basic human needs which is why the human’s continuous research process becomes necessary for such developments to come.
This gives a clear picture of how vast this field is and to learn all that in one life is not possible by any means, but many known Design Institutions claim commonly and strongly emphasizing their abilities to teach detailed versatility of textile in various segments such as fiber, yarn, weaving, dyeing, processing, printing, non-woven and their permutations and combinations with varying aspects of its practicality and techniques, Adding flavour, churning and proudly taking the small gist and gesture of textile by giving an important example such as resist process of textile for dyeing and printing techniques, various textile craft techniques without giving much detail about textiles, geometrical, physical, chemical abilities.
While learning one should know the above said because, textile is said to be the second skin which people wear over their actual skin, and this should be smart in all means. This in today's time is not found to be totally accurate in design drawing as global textile industry is needed from designers. As said above it is their habit to talk big without possessing basic knowledge of versatility in relation to the subject, and they live with beautiful jargon's, versatile names of it, and compositions in their mix and match style while copying. That is why nobody is taking shape from such institutions to be like the “Guru of Textile” William Morris. That is why the placement for them is full of struggle for their survival in the field of textile designing.
As above mentioned it is not for humiliating other institutions even though we are all grown up designers gone through with such teaching and learning process and style. Myself Prof.Khalid Ameer Rafiuqe was quite hesitant after graduation from NID to practice as a designer in the renowned textile industries finds less abilities to practice as a designer appropriately with gained knowledge from NID but that era was different in comparison to present days.
The continuous effort and writing notes in relation to what was learnt in the institute as a learner and what is different in textile industry has a huge gap when compared but “who can fill that gap?” which is the biggest task for any design institute and that task is sportingly taken up by Prof.Khalid .
That is why GIFT textile design education course abstract and teaching methods along with its objectives, missions and policies are very different and very appropriate for a fresh learner as well as for understanding. GIFT being an NGO believes in helping hands working with their heart and soul in favor of the fresh learner and his or her learning.
GIFT textile Course content is meaning wise more or less the same as above where some educational aspects may be like other Design Institutes except a few, totally originated by GIFT but the teaching methods are certainly different in favor for small and large textile industrial needs. Its teaching is made so simple that it is similar to the system of eating healthy food resulting in good results for the body.
That means that GIFT textile relation and its basic understanding is very close to the needs of the human society with tremendous consideration to the depths of its existence, and thoroughly considered, without fail, every time a fresh learner is individually taught any subject.
Why does a GIFT learner not fail to inculcate al the designing skills while learning?
This is simply because each abstract course content has varying style of numerous explorations through empirical methods along with practice, before reaching the final selection of the ideal concept of any design. This is followed by an open presentation to all for a general critic and approval from GIFT faculty.

Airplane Fabric
It is a closely woven plain weave with comb and is mercerized yarn to cover the inner part of the wings of the airplane. Nowadays it is also made of nylon, polyester, cotton blends which are resistant to mist and frost.
Alpaca Crepe
A plain weave fabric of two ply yarn generally made from rayon to act as a stimulator to coarse wool fabric.
Amara
Made of 60% nylon and 40% polyurethane foam and the market name of the product is “suede”
Backed Cloth
This fabric is designed with an extra warp filling (weft) usually from cotton or wool to add weight to the fabric. The users mostly prefer twill or a satin weave used for vests, suitings etc.
Bagheera velvet
It is a fine woven uncut pile velvet for a rough smoothened surface which is crushed and still has resistence. it is mostly used for ladies in evening gowns.
Baloon cloth
Is made by using a yarn count of 60’s to 100’s, combed mercerized, having a lustrous surface. It is especially used for dress materials, shirting, and earlier used as a typewriter ribbon.
Barathea
It is an extremely distinct type of fabric made from silk or a man made fiber. It has a broken ribb weave construction with a pebble surface mostly used for making ties.
Bark Crepe
Originally developed with wool with a crepe construction and is a tree bark style. Presently made with rayon and other manmade fiber for coat material for women’s wear.
Batiste
Initially made in 3 styles with a blend in cotton, polyester, pure cotton and wool. The construction of this textile is plain and extremely soft in nature named after the “Lawn Family”. Nowadays lightweight lawn fabric is also available in the market with various blends whereas the actual lawn was made from cotton itself.
Cut Velvet
It has a similar construction like that of Velvet with a cut pile, earlier cut using scissors and lately highly automatic cutting machines are used for the same cutting process. It is made in various figurative styles on jacquard machine and is a plain weave though dobby weave used especially for women’s evening wear.
Bedford Cord
Earlier was used to be made from wool in a 2 ply yarn for warp and backing was single for the coat material but nowadays it is available in all textile blends for multipurpose in different look..
Bisso Linen
Its other name is “Altar Linen” made from assorted flax wiry yarn which gives a crisp feeling. It is a very fine sheer linen good for top clothing.
Brocade
Historically, in the golden era, it was mostly woven in a sateen weave. An elaborate lustrous design woven in the style of a raised surface in appearance with a fabric construction of twill weave using decorative colored yarn in weft along with metallic threads. It used to be woven in pit looms called “jaala weaving” in India
Calico
It is made from very fine count cotton or cotton with a man made fiber also used in printing purposes and the product of its uses are aprons, dresses, curtains and quilts.
Cambric
A very light weight fabric, closely woven with plain weave of very fine count, usually woven with cotton or linen. Its end product is used as handkerchiefs, children’s dresses, night gowns, lungis and dhotis.
Cotton crepe
Normally woven by silk or rayon yarn with crepe construction where warp is finer and the weft filling is coarser making the fabric heavier and durable which drapes well mostly used for women’s dresses.
Cotton flannel
The warp face is cotton or blended cotton with other fiber. The construction of fabric is of twill and the filling (weft) if heavier than the warp with long nap is later processed in the mill .the final product is used for hand gloves, infant wear or lining.
Canvas
Basically a heavy fabric made form cotton or linen in two styles. Firstly it was with an open mesh canvas made for embroidery purposes earlier through hand spinning technique nowadays used for making shoes, purses, bags etc. Secondly it is closely woven with a coarse count of highly twisted yarn in two or more ply’s in plain weave for various product developments of such a textile.this is further used in the luggage industry as well as for the artists.
Real Cashmere fabric is woven only from Cashmere goat’s hair which is fine and closely woven in twill weave, naturally napped. It is extremely soft and full of warmth with the end product mostly turned into a shawl.
Chambray
It is usually woven by a colored yarn warp with natural or white filling(weft) giving tiny checks of mottled effect. This has endless variations in the same contrast of weaving nowadays also available in stripes, checks etc and the market is full of such products in variety.
Charvet Silk
It is woven in stripes of rib weaves, straight or diagonal, mostly with silk and manmade fiber. Due to its softness it is used only for neck-ties.
Chiffon
Made with a light weight highly twisted yarn with a plain weave construction of silk and man made fiber. It has a character of transparency with a soft finish mostly used for sarees , dresses, scarves, lingerie etc.
Mostly woven by silk with natural uneven thickness and thinness at irregular intervals in the yarn. This normally twisted structure helps to give more sheen than chiffon .the fabric weight is light and its end product is used in lingerie and scarves.
Chintz
Woven with low count cotton in plain weave especially made for printing purposes in chintz style. Its finishing similar to other printed fabric with added calendar effect for its glaze and smoothness used in drapes and dresses.
Crepe
This fabric is known for its wrinkled effect on its surface mostly woven in plain weave with highly twisted warp and a normal twist filling(weft) . It can also be woven with stylized constructions of textile with a normal twist yarn or different components of yarn through chemical treatment available in silk, cotton, manmade or with their blends appropriately. It is used in scarves, dresses, lingerie, sarees etc and a heavier crepe is used for men’s wear. Nowadays designers are manipulating through its derivative style of construction geometrically, figuratively while blending various fabric construction with crepe style of construction. It has no limit to its explorations for creating meaningful and endless textile for various purposes.
Corduroy
It is a ribbed pile type fabric with extra style of filling threads which forms horizontal or vertical loops in small floating controlled style with proper tension that is unstretchable.
The loops and floats get entangled strongly and when the fabric is taken off the loom the pile and floats are cut from the centre vertical position. After cutting the pile fabric gets crushed and a pile formation takes place which can be designed by mixing versatile colors and filling to have endless results. It is used in coats, trousers, skirt and now days in home décor etc.
Damask
Similar to brocade woven on a jacquard loom. A comparatively flatter embossed effect with a compact weave smoother than brocade and the construction of the weave also has larger floats and loops on the surface of the fabric. It is woven with a highly twisted yarn due to which the durability is high. Damask can be identified because of its design seen from both sides in the shape of a square. Nowadays the designer’s exploration for making damask is endless and is used mostly for formal wear and elite use it as home décor.
Denim
Mostly woven in a 2 up 2 down twill weave from the left to right direction with colored warp and an undyed yarn filling (weft). The warp is of a coarser count more twisted in nature as compared to the weft. More or less denim is made from 6-8 nos of cotton count through open spinning system. In order to make a softer denim the same style needs to be used instead a twill weave of 3 up 3 down or 4 up 4 down etc should be used and the the reed of the weave should be adjusted appropriately. This in turn is good for making softer fabric and products like shirts, jackets, jeans etc.
Drill
This is a tough fabric woven with 3 shafts with a construction of 2 up 1 down twill weave, which has more weight holding capacity. This can be made for designers for versatile usage while using very fine to coarse count with permutation and combinations of high and low twist for extra crinkled effect. It is used in heavy shirting, uniforms, coats, trousers etc.
Flannel
Cloth mostly full of nap (raised fibers like slub yarn) with wool and fabric construction normally a balanced twill with an open mesh giving an extremely soft surface .Its end use is in men’s suit, shirt, trouser and in some cases blended to make specialized garments using cotton.
Gabardine
In today’s textile industry it is referred as 2 up 2 down twill weave in a left to right direction as said in the textile construction language. In earlier times it was made with carded and combed cotton yarn, rayon, worsted from medium count where warp was with ply yarn and weft was single. It is mostly used like a coarser and tough fabric for a skirt, jacket, trouser, coat and a heavy shirting.
Georgette
Basically a sheer , light weight textile in a construction style of a crepe textile where the warp ends are alternatively blended with high twist and normal twist yarn whereas the weft (filing) remains the same like that of the warp . Singles count, highly twisted yarn which creates concepts like Textile Surfaces or crinkled texture is also used which is harsher than chiffon. This type of textile is more or less used for printing with an end use like dress materials, saris, blouse, lingerie etc. originally was made only with silk yarn but gradually it has also started being made in man-made yarns.
Huck (Huckaback)
Derived its existence when Swedish people wore this textile, made by lifting (picking) warp threads, by filling floats and vice-versa in order to create a pattern. Originally made in linen, now is made in various types textile like honeycomb construction along with dobby effect. Its end use is mostly home décor and ladies garments.
Irish poplin
Originally made with silk warp and wool weft through construction of plain weave. Due to the wool a fine rib takes shape in the fabric and similarly is possible with cotton and linen, with a loose weave specially used for neck wear and also in women’s wear in Italy
Jeans Textile
Originally constructed with 3 harnesses, a warp face, light in weight which later got converted into a coarser count denim, where warp count is higher than weft. Historically also made through a herringbone style of construction.
Long cloth
Extremely fine plain cotton fabric woven with a high count yarn where weight of fabric is little higher than lawn textile. Generally it is combed and its construction has more of a squarish look. This fabric can also be used for the printing as well as dyeing material etc.
This is woven in the style of fine and bold stripes or checks through coarse cotton yarn usually combed. Its color bleeds while washing, every time creating new look. Mostly used for shirting and madras checks, known globally.
Muslin
Basically a coarser type of plain weave where fabric is made only from carded cotton, heavier than long cloth, known for its character of unbleached sheeting. Its end use is for covering purposes and now for draping patterns by Fashion Designers.
Organdy
It is a sheer, stiff cloth woven in plain construction with combed cotton yarn with a very fine warp count of 100-150 ne with a weft of 100 ne. this weave is closely woven with a filling of stiffness. This is obtained by giving a temporary or permanent sizing treatment, followed by a weave stretching for easy laundry and crushing of the cloth at a later stage. It can be used as a stiff curtain and also in evening dresses for ladies mostly in pastel shades. Previously available in both cotton and silk, and now only in cotton.
Organza
It is a sheer, thin, stiff and a plain weave fabric, made of a high twisted silk or a man made filament. Fibers which crush easily which can be pressed and moved appropriately in a garment. It is mostly used in woven evening gowns.
The basic meaning of this textile seems to be missing and this name has been given to the weft. It is said to be a semi- basket weave for a heavy weight fabric made of cotton and rayon yarn which is carded and combed and on the other hand it is the same except that the weft in mercerized yarn. Used mainly for shirting, dress materials and its use.
Sateen
Originally woven as the upper surface with a smooth and lustrous finish. It is a warp- face construction. Comparatively the warp ends are higher than that of the weft. Nowadays sateen is available in cotton, wool, silk, and man-made fabric such as rayon, polyester etc, for multiple purposes, with varying grades. When woven with a finest count then it is used as textiles for making ties.
Satin
Originally woven with silk filament and now versatility with various man made filaments has taken place. This is a warp-face, highly lustrous fabric, good for lingerie and dresses used as a high quality fabric. It is mostly used for labeling.
Sheeting
Originally made from cotton of 10s and 30s count but is now mostly made with Carded yarn. Its construction of sheeting is more or less same in warp and weft but to increase the strength occasionally the number of count is increased by 2-4 %. Nowadays it is also available in various blends for various purposes. Used sometimes for cheaper bed sheets and curtains during winters.
Shepherd’s checks
Originally a group of 4 ends colored warp and 4 picks with no color in weft with a fabric construction of twill where float of warp and weft is number 4 and more. Nowadays designers are using such concepts in multiple colors available in wool and silk for various purposes like ladies garment, shirting and special shepherd checks in Bhagalpur
Tapestry
An originally crafted textile which has a figurative meaning while blending more weaving construction in 1 form surface .Usually woven on the jacquard loom. It has 2-3 layers of fabric woven congested available in both fine and coarse texture. It is mostly used as upholstery.
Taffeta
Generally it was a smooth closely woven fabric in plain weave construction by silk which is crisp in nature. it is used in dresses, suits and lingerie.
Terry Cloth
This is a warp fabric having uncut loops on both sides of the textile which is woven on a terry loom (tobbaya), mostly used in towels.
It is mostly woven in wool with micron gradation and is segregated which can be piece dyed or a yarn dyed fabric and its construction not very specific. It can be plain , basket or twill weave and sometimes herringbone. It is woven by a coarse yarn and its milling in olden days was like Scottish tweed, which once is off loom is used to be spread on the wooden flooring where couples danced with wooden flat sole shoes for its milling. It is used for coat blazer.
Velvet
Originally it is made with compact, short warp pile of silk and later with man made fiber. It is similar to flush fabric which has a softer feel. It can be printed and its end use is in ladies garments.
Voile
Normally this is woven with fine single yarns, highly twisted with plain fabric construction. Generally is made out of a highly combed cotton yarn. Especially for children and ladies garments.

GIFT NGOs Professional Degree Learning means: Gift appropriate design course abstract, Individual Professional Design Project, Professional Practice in appropriate Industry, Research and beside Gift Course abstract learning, all learn work should be documented properly in three copy, which means 1 for each, learner, Gift and associate university, then Gift will provide them Associate Degree, which means Gift NGOs learners will learn Designing 100% in Gift Institute and 100% they will practice in appropriate industry, but Gift NGOs Faculty will monitor fully, that means the Design Course will be completed in two phase equally, such as 50% time for learning in Gift and 50% time for Industrial Practice and this year Gift learner need not to pay for Industrial Phase Practice and Learning to Gift, which means the FEE remain same for learning at Gift as per Gift fee structure, till then there is no change.
